At the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, rescuing and providing homes for nonhuman primates is deeply satisfying because of the new and rich life we give these individuals. It is a fact of life, of course, that these individuals eventually die. So it was, sadly, with Holly, the eldest baboon at the Sanctuary.
Each week thousands of live cattle undertake a three-week journey from the Amazon port of Belem in Brazil to Beirut in Lebanon. The cattle are crammed into trucks in the burning Amazon heat. For four days they are unable to move or lie down and receive no food or water. Those who fall are trapped and injured. Then they are roughly loaded onto a ship to endure a 17-day voyage to Lebanon. All of this, only to be slaughtered at journey’s end, and often in inhumane ways.
Bill Description: This bill would strengthen existing state law to create an agency tasked with the protection and care of domesticated animals and their sale to consumers. The effect of this law would be to expand protections for birds, mammals, and reptiles that are sold within the state or that are imported or exported from the state. A license or permit would be required in order to sell these animals at pet stores.

ESA Protection for Polar Bears
Secretary Kempthorne announced today that the polar bear will be protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as a threatened species due to the threat of decreasing sea ice habitat caused by climate change. Born Free USA united with API welcomes this necessary step to protecting polar bears, but has reservations that an interpretation of the ESA will, as Secretary Kempthorne says, "ensure the protection of the bear while allowing us to continue to develop our natural resources in the arctic region in an environmentally sound way."
